The "Birthday in a Box" program partners with local homeless shelters to provide birthday parties for children who are celebrating a birthday while living in transitional housing.  The project is currently in collaboration with Safe Futures of New London, which operates two 24-hour hotlines, an emergency shelter and a transitional housing program for families working to rebuild lives shattered by domestic violence or sexual assault.

Families at "Safe Futures" can live in the transitional housing for up to two years.  This means that there are always many children, ranging from infants to teenagers, who need our help to celebrate their milestones! Many of these families arrive with just the clothes on their backs and they begin a 6-24 month process of developing better self-esteem, life skills, job skills and healthy lives.

There is a beautiful community room and with a few basic supplies, the mothers in the shelter will be able to celebrate with their children. The program relies 100% on donations for special occasions.  The following wish list of items are needed:

  • Paper plates, cups, napkins
  • Paper tablecloths
  • Birthday wrapping paper
  • Plastic cutlery
  • Gift cards that will allow mothers to choose a special gift for their child

Donations can be left in the donation station in the hall by Sybil's Office.
